Place à l'art 2025 - Wolvendael Park in Uccle

"Sunny afternoon at Parc Wolvendael"
15x15cm oil on cotton panel
(private collection, Brussels)

UPDATE: the final concert and "Place à l'art" of Sunday 31 August will take place inside the Cultural Center. I will not attend as I prefer when the event takes place outdoors where I can paint the scenery.

Thanks for visiting my stand on the 17th and 24th and see you there next year!

This year's "Place à l'art" event is back at Wolvendael Park for the last three Sunday afternoons of August:

Place à l'Art 2025:    17, 24 and 31 August, from 15h30 to 18h30

At the same time you can enjoy three free one-hour concerts in the park:

Musiques au Parc

  • Le dimanche 17 août, de 17h à 18h : Musique cubaine avec Tumbao Cubano
  • Le dimanche 24 août, de 17h à 18h : Soul jazz avec Laurent Doumont – L’Americano
  • Le dimanche 31 août, de 17h à 18h : Musique classique avec le duo Emma Posman & Leen Van der Roost

NB: If rain is forecasted, then the events on 24 and 31 August take place indoors at the nearby Cultural Center, 47 Rue Rouge. If it rains on 17 August, the concert is moved to the former Maison Communale on Place Van der Elst.

See you there!

Change of location*

See you at the Parvis Saint-Pierre this Sunday morning, 18/08/24

My exhibit at the Parvis Saint-Pierre in Uccle in front of the church:

Sunday 18 August 2024 from 9h30 to 13h00 (Morning only)

Several bus lines or trams 92 or 4 will get you there. The stop is "Heros".

NB: If it rains the event is cancelled.

The complete schedule for "Place à l'Art!" is listed on the Uccle website:  Uccle Culture: Place à l'art 2024.

*Normally in August, the event is held in the "Théatre de Verdure", but this summer Parc Wolvendael is closed due to the storm that took down trees there in July and caused a fatal accident. Works are still ongoing to make the park safe for visitors.

Sketching in oil

 "Place à l'art le 20 aout 2023"
13x18cm, oil on canvas panel

I think that when you paint small from life in a couple hours max, you can call it an "oil sketch". These two were painted en plein air during the Place à l'Art event in Uccle in August. It took place in the park because the weather was good. I got two tables, a few chairs and a spot in the shade -- what more can you ask!?

Plein Air

"Lambertmontmartre at the KMSKA"
20x25cm oil on canvas

Our Belgian heatwave made the day nearly unbearable but I wanted to take advantage of the Lambertmontmartre event in front of the Antwerp Fine Arts Museum to do some plein air painting. If you arrive early, you can get a spot with some shade under the trees.

Then in Uccle on 2 July, I set up a stand near the flower shop and did a small painting. The flow of people going to the "Marché Bio" brought visitors to our "Place à l'art" exhibit.

"Fête de la musique à la Ferme Rose"

"Fête de la musique à la Ferme Rose"
20 x 25cm, oil on canvas
(private collection, Uccle)

It's never been so hot on June 18th in Belgium. Nonetheless we had our exhibit at the Ferme Rose while musicians played in the courtyard. I painted quickly trying to capture the light before it changed. I had left the blue chairs empty to fill in later when the crowds arrived, not realizing that they would pick up all the chairs and move them to a shadier spot off to the left. I also waited to paint the musicians later because I figured the light didn't matter so much back there. So when the five person Brasilian band, Roda Rio, stepped on stage and they fit my composition, I added them. Of course, people enjoyed the music so much they started dancing, photographing the group, and blocking my view but that's all part of the challenge of "plein air" painting.

Sketches of Uccle

"Eglise Saint Pierre", oil on 15x15cm canvas

I'm working on some small oil studies of Uccle. I found images of Saint Peter's Church in Google Street View but preferred the older links when Le Parvis had a brighter facade:  link

"Eglise Saint-Job", oil on 10x10cm canvas
(private collection, Uccle)

Another iconic Uccle landmark is the church on Place Saint-Job. Here it is in Street View: Link

"Rue Xavier De Bue", oil on 13x18cm canvas panel
(private collection, Drogenbos)

The painting above was started from my stand at "Place(s) à l'Art" in 2013 and recently completed using reference photographs.

"Le Doyenné", oil on 13x18cm canvas panel

I also found a nice view of the 18th century presbytery behind Saint Peter's Church on Google Street View: link.  The building now serves as a cultural center with space for art exhibits.

Le Louis XV

This small painting was started in 2017 when I called it "Heatwave in May" to reflect the surprisingly early summer weather that hit Belgium that year. But that's no longer unusual since we had 20°C at the end of February in 2019.

I just added some finishing touches and changed the title to the name of the restaurant that currently occupies the 18th century pavilion in Wolvendael Park.

Once I finetune a system for walking around with a few wet 10x15's, oil paints, and a chair, I could try sketching in oil at an outdoor USK event.

Parc de Wolvendael en automne

After painting the park in March, I was inspired to try a contrasting fall view using my photographs from last November. Each path is named after an artist from Uccle. I think the one that crosses the little bridge is the "Allée Gaston Bertrand" but when I went to check, I couldn't find the sign.

Fin mars au Parc de Wolvendael

We're having some unusually warm weather for this time of year in Belgium so I packed my gear and painted this view from a bench at the top of Wolvendael Park. The trees are still bare so you can see the Eglise Saint Pierre church tower just behind the Centre Culturel d'Uccle.

La Maison Communale d'Uccle

During the rainy winter period, I painted this view of the town hall of Uccle. It is based on a photo taken by the Google Street View team on a warm day in September 2014: link

Place(s) à l'Art - 14 August 2016 - two small paintings

In August, "Place(s) à l'art" is always held in Wolvendael Park during the Sunday morning "Concert au Parc".

In my painting below, the artists have already set up their tables while people from the Commune d'Uccle are busy preparing the nearby concert venue.

At 13h00 it was time to pack up, so I moved to a park bench where I had a good view of the Pavillon Louis XV, currently a restaurant:
